How to Update Audio and Video Settings from the Lobby

Modified on Mon, 20 Apr at 6:36 AM

Before you enter a room, the lobby gives you a chance to check and configure your camera, microphone, and speaker. Use it to make sure your setup is working the way you want before anyone else can see or hear you.

Each input and output has its own on/off toggle and a device selector so you can choose between multiple connected devices. The microphone and speaker also include testing tools so you can confirm everything is working before you join.

ℹ️
Settings set here apply when you enter the room. If the room has Users Enter Muted enabled, your microphone will be turned off on entry regardless of this setting — but your device selection and speaker preferences are always carried through.

?Speaker

Turn your speaker on or off

Click the speaker button to enable or disable audio output. When off, you'll enter the room without hearing other participants.

Select your speaker

If you have multiple audio output devices — such as built-in speakers and a connected headset — use the dropdown to choose which one to use.

External Headphones

Test your speaker

Click the Test button to play a short audio tone through your selected output device. If you hear the sound, your speaker is set up correctly and you're ready to join.

If you don't hear anything after clicking Test, make sure the correct output device is selected and that your system volume isn't muted.

?Microphone

Turn your microphone on or off

Click the microphone button to enable or disable your audio before joining.

Microphone on — your audio will be active when you join
Microphone off — you'll enter muted

Select your microphone

If you have multiple microphones connected — such as a built-in mic and a headset — use the dropdown to choose which one to use.

MacBook Pro Microphone

Test your microphone

To confirm your microphone is picking up sound, speak and watch the input level meter. If the bars move and animate when you talk, your microphone is working correctly.

If the bars don't move at all when you speak, check that the correct microphone is selected and that Chrome has permission to access it. See Camera & Microphone Permissions in Chrome for help.

?Camera

Turn your camera on or off

Click the camera button to enable or disable your video before joining. When on, your camera preview is visible in the lobby so you can check your framing and lighting before entering the room.

Camera on — your video will be active when you join
Camera off — you'll enter without video

Select your camera

If you have more than one camera connected — for example a built-in webcam and an external USB camera — use the dropdown to choose which one to use.

FaceTime HD Camera (Built-in)

Click the dropdown and select your preferred camera from the list of available devices.
